This is my favorite time of the golf season, Invitationals! Some clubs have already conducted two day invitationals, but the three day and in some cases four day invites are the best. It’s like taking a golf trip without leaving town. You eat, drink, drink, and sleep golf. At least I do anyway. I’m writing this on the eve of the Orchard Park Invitational.
I play with my best friend Will. We’ve been buddies over 40 years so it’s special to spend time with him every year competing as a team, and we’re a good team. We won the event in 2014, and were named flight winner in 2017 because the group that won our flight finished second overall. We finished second in out flight that year, but did not lose a match. We won 6 matches and halved the match against the flight winners. A 3 putt by me on the last hole still haunts me! Will and I love to compete and always have with each other. We used to beat each other’s brains out in driveway hoops and backyard football. We ran against each other for class president and fought a bitter battle which Will won. We remained best friends throughout it all and make better teammates because of it.
The competition is just one part of the invitationals, the social aspect is even bigger. I large part, the same group of guys compete and it’s like a reunion. Good natured ribbing, shiny new cars, and side bets are all a part of it. Real first world stuff, but all by good people and a pretty place. So if you know me and need to get ahold of me the next few days, I won’t be available. But I do hope you root for Will and me.
